Dystopia

Dystopia  and Utopia can’t be disassociated; both concepts are different sides of the same coin.
Both concepts are ultimately opinions, points of view, dogmas or dreams.
Dystopia is associated with the failure of bringing Utopia to life. Dystopia is the incorporation of that failure, it represents the opposite of what Utopia was meant to be.
That Christianization in some parts of the world sometimes went through a peaceful process, but also through rather violent events and sometimes through military intervention that helped to convert natives by force.

Utopia

Utopia and Dystopia can’t be disassociated; both concepts are different sides of the same coin.
Both concepts are ultimately opinions, points of view, dogmas or dreams.
Utopia is associated with perfection and harmony . That perfection can be interpreted across various domains; society, religion, art, technology.
A religion example of Utopia; Christianization.

Timeline

We won’t be talking about the kind of Timeline displayed in this image... Mostly because we lack the necessary skills and knowledge to do so. Why am I talking as in “we”? I don’t know... Senility knocking on my mental door? Perhaps... But it may be that I’m just tired.
Back to the tight track, the timeline I should be talking about refers to important and relevant, revolutions, paradigms or events related to art that marked each decade from 1900.
I will use the image as example, inspiration or model that will visually expose each decade.
Few examples of the decades and their events:
1900-1910. De Stijl, Futurism, Modernism
1940-1950. WWII
1950-1960. Space Race, Teenager Concept, Rebels/Rebellion
1960-1970. Use of colour, Pop Art
1970-1980. Birth of Disco, Funky Style, Birth of Blockbuster
1980-1990. Computers, Videogame
1990-2000. Information Age

The Great Wave off Kanagawa

It is considered one of the finest images.
One of the greatest things about it is the fact that you can’t actually place it in time if you had no information about it.
To be fair you could place it anywhere in the modern age. Its theme is the only thing about it that gives away hints on its time location. It’s time located somewhere between 1823-1829. The result is impressive considering the archaic method used then.

Review: Terra Nova

A good premise gone terribly wrong. It basically says everything about this TV show.
The very first seconds promised so many good things, great imagery, decent futuristic prediction n’ the easily recognisable Spielberg’s touch fills you up with excitement. But that’ll soon turns into disappointment when you’re introduced to some of the main characters, more specifically when they open their mouths n’ start to interact with each other. The first dialogues, the first action scene n’ the lack of chemistry is a prelude of what’s about to come.
This show has the higher density of equivoques I can remember so far. It raises so many doubts on your mind that in a very early stage you’ll find yourself wondering if you shouldn’t just get up n’ turn the TV OFF. But because hope is something inherent to the human condition you give it few more minutes to improve, n’ then another few minutes n’ so on until the thing finally ends. Pretty soon the regret n’ that time badly spent sensation take over you.
The acting is awful, there isn’t any chemistry at all among the characters, I repeat, there isn’t any chemistry at all. The dialogues make no sense, the acting is awful n’ the direction takes everything everywhere but to Terra Nova.
The plot supposedly evolves around this family that is equal to so many families you’ve seen before... Father/son conflict, husband/wife conflict, “rebel” teenage boy meets girl, perfect intelligent teenage daughter meets boy n’ a child so innocent that a giant pre-historic creatures causes no impression. They bring nothing new but a new level of annoyance n’ boredom n’ the perfect example of that is the mother’s accent.
About giant pre-historic creatures, for a high budget production, it’s just too bad. Spielberg’s first Jurassic Park pre-historic creatures make these look archaic. But it doesn’t end here, there’s a long list of question that’ll flood your mind; so far away in the future with amazing technology n’ we as species are still driving 4WD SUVs; a bunch of dissidents/rebels/faction who supposedly are the good ones are under the command of a relatively young black female “warrior”; a pre-historic giant creature fails to chop someone’s legs after having it between its jaws for what would appear to any human to be an eternity; n’ the list goes on.

Review - The Mysterious Geographic Explorations of Jasper Morello

If you didn’t read or know anything thing about “The Mysterious Explorations of Jasper Morello”, the very first frames will immediately make you think: “This is Tim Burton’s work”.

But soon enough you’ll realise that that first impression was wrong. Although you’ll easily find similarities between this film n’ Tim Burton’s, this one will take you in another direction into the world of animation.

I’d say n’ to put an end to the comparisons, that this film “lacks” the attention to detail displayed on Burton’s characters.

The entire action runs under a Sepia tone n’ the narrative is made in the first person by the main character, Jasper Morelo in some sort of melancholic, monotone, emotionless voice, which make perfect sense with the slow-paced action taking place. Everything in the film move according to a very specific n’ unique tempo but you’ll find it very difficult to grasp all the details n’ activities that are going on. That happens due the perfect combination of two worlds; the main characters n’ actions move in this almost archaic 2D world, that’s how it visually looks, will remind you of “South Park”; n’ the beautiful n’ visually attractive 3D world in the background. The background is always very active, there’s always something happening n’ the action tempo there matches both the narrative tone.

So, we have these two opposite worlds working together in perfect harmony. The perfection meaning that all the visual appealing of the background won’t distract you from what’s really important, the action, the characters, n’ the story. The apparent lack of details in the characters doesn’t have any kind of negative impact whatsoever. The characters posses enough details that allow the viewers to make their own psychological characterization of each of them, the facial n’ body languages are perfectly shown n’ so are the emotions they show.

The dialogues are clear n’ just enough, they give the impression that only a certain amount of words were allowed to be used, combined with absence of music n’ good acting leaving no margin for dead time.

The Sepia tone is broken in key/dramatic moments with the introduction of Red n’ Orange colours, representing life n’ death, life struggling to stay in the body, life fading away n’ the suffering of the soul, the torments of the characters facing death. These moments mark important changes in the plot n’ set the perfect timing for the introduction of music n’ sound effects.

Although it’s narrated in the first person, the story doesn’t evolve only around the main character, the spotlight is well distributed n’ basically tells the story of a crew in an adventure.
